The EPDs has been in static “pdf” format since their development. Information stored in a pdf document is not readable by software and tools developed to make building environmental assessment. So called “machine-readable EPDs” or Digital EPDs are introduced to facilitate better use of vast amount of data available in an EPD document.

Digital EPDs are machine-readable EPD information stored in an XML file format that can be added into one of the EPD databases hosted in our servers. All digitised data is linked to the original EPD and the EPD Operator, hence making the communication of environmental impacts of construction products in a quantitative, credible, comparable and understandable way based on an established ILCD+EPD format.

The ILCD is widely used data format developed by the European Commission. In order to integrate EPD specific information (e.g. scenarios, modules, type of data), extensions was added to form ILCD+EPD format. The structure and format of the data is aligned with the format discussions in the International Open Data Network for Sustainable Building (InData) network. ILCD+EPD format allows the flexibility adapt national requirements to underlying standards in the future (M350).

The EPD Registry™ has started the worldwide initiative of digitisation of EPDs and include them in one of country specific, regional and worldwide databases available. The initiative is sponsored by the manufacturers at product level and countries and/or regions at database level. The EPD Registry™ will be the single source to allow the possibility to adapt the environmental information of construction products to specific end-user needs and market applications such as public procurement, building environmental performance assessment and other environmental calculation tools.

Every construction product in The EPD Registry™ comes with the following options:

    • Hardcopy of EPD in pdf format. For information only and it is not machine-readable. For example:
      Download EPD
    • Digital version in ILCD+EPD and InData compliant format is not available. Look for alternative products at one of the EPD Databases published by The EPD Registry™. For example:
